Joining as a Vehicle Security Engineer in 1995 and then becoming the manager,

Mike led the team opening new paths to predominantly work with Vehicle Manufacturers, police forces, Governments and other vehicle security organisations on a global basis, with the overall remit of finding solutions to reduce vehicle crime.

Responsible for security updates that drove down car crime from over 625,000 cars to just over 75,000 cars stolen and created criteria to combat vehicle-enabled crime against other vehicle types. The theft of construction plant equipment and agricultural vehicles has not gone untouched, the standards are continually being pushed higher along with tracking and cyber-style crimes whether connected or transmitted.

Setting standards for alarms/immobilisers, other electrical, mechanical and tracking systems and installation of systems for all vehicle types, enabling the right system to be fitted to the right vehicle type.

He has influenced many countries worldwide, with one engineer permanently based in South East Asia, support for Sweden through TFF Motor Insurance in maintaining a reduced theft risk for the Swedish market and worked in a range of other countries throughout Europe. Also where vehicle crime is the common denominator assisting in tackling vehicle crime in America, Canada, Japan, Korea and Russia

In July 2016 Mike took on a new challenge and started his own company VSST Ltd to maintain standards and find solutions against theft threats with key stakeholders such as police, the Government, the Aftermarket tracking and security systems suppliers forming the Tracking and Aftermarket Security System Association (TASSA), insurers, vehicle manufacturers, and others in the continuing battle against crime across the globe.

Tony Campbell

Tony Campbell has been CEO of MCIA, the UK’s industry association, since 2017 having joined directly from the Piaggio Group where he was the UK MD for thirteen years. Having identified the potential for powered, light two-, three- and four-wheel vehicles in the future transport mix, Tony orchestrated the inclusion of MCIA in the Government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan, placing L-Category vehicles prominently in the transport mix in the route to net zero. Other than the sector being recognised for its potential to address congestion, air quality and climate change, two major hurdles have been getting in the way, Road Safety and Motorcycle Theft and related crime. In terms of Motorcycle Theft and related crime, the sector equates to roughly 18% of all vehicle types stolen yet represents only 3% of vehicles on the road. MCIA have for many years supported and co-chaired the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group in an effort to coordinate the wider stakeholder group to come together to tackle this issue. Since joining MCIA, Tony has placed Motorcycle Theft at the forefront of discussion and is now looking for wider support to address the issue.

David Crilly

Ken Tindell

Dr. Ken Tindell is the CTO of Canis Automotive Labs. He has been involved with CAN since the mid-90s and has extensive experience in the automotive industry.

He co-founded LiveDevices (later acquired by Bosch)
He co-founded Volcano Communications Technologies (later acquired by Mentor Graphics)
His PhD is in real-time systems, and he produced the first timing analysis for CAN and also originated the concept of holistic scheduling to tackle the co-dependency between CPU and bus scheduling.
He worked with Volvo Cars on the CAN networking in the P2X platform and was one of the team that in 1999 won the Volvo Technology Award for in-car networking.
His focus today as CTO of Canis Labs is on augmenting CAN for both performance and security with the new CAN-HG protocol, upgrading CAN for today’s challenges. He is developing intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) technology for CAN that uses CAN-HG to defeat various attacks on the CAN bus.

Nathan McGanty

President Nathan McGanty is a Lieutenant with the Chesapeake (VA) Police Department as the evening shift Command Duty Officer. His career with Chesapeake Police started in February 2003 where he has served in many roles.

Since attending his first IAATI conference in 2011 he has been a regular and active participant and both his local South East Chapter training events and at the International IAATI conferences. In 2018 he was appointed President of South East IAATI and commenced as an International Board member which has resulted in his election as President at the 2023 IAATI conference in Hawaii.

Nathan leads a busy life. In addition to his role as IAATI President and his full-time position with Chesapeake Police, he also serves as the editor of IAATI’s APB and Vehicle Crimes Today publications, has led the redevelopment of IAATI’s new website, and in February this year commenced a two-year term as President of the International Association of Marine Investigators (IAMI).

James Abdy

James joined Derbyshire Constabulary in September 2022 on secondment and temporary promotion from South Yorkshire Police as the Assistant Chief Constable responsible for Crime and Criminal Justice. Having joined the police service in January 1996, he has worked as a detective at every rank, performing a number of roles within CID, major crime, intelligence, serious and organised crime and covert policing.

James was promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent as Head of Crime in 2016, which followed a period of temporary promotion as the District Commander for the city of Sheffield. Prior to joining Derbyshire, James was the District Commander for Barnsley. For several years, James also chaired the Yorkshire and Humber Threat Reduction Group for Modern Slavery, Human Trafficking and Organised Immigration Crime.

He is an experienced Gold Commander, Strategic Firearms Commander and PIP 4 Strategic Investigator. As a Detective Superintendent, James worked as a PIP 3 Senior Investigating Officer with the Major Incident Teams, led specialist crime operations as the Director of Intelligence and Crime Operations, and worked locally with partner agencies as the Operations Superintendent at Sheffield West. He holds an MSc in Police Science and Management and a BSc (Hons) Business Studies.

Simon Hurr

Simon Hurr is the global expert for physical security at Ford Motor Company (FMC) , a position he has held for over two decades. He holds and is named in multiple patents held by FMC for vehicle security applications.
He is a warranted Officer of the National Crime Agency (NCA) for his specialist automotive knowledge and previously served with Essex Police where he obtained the rank of sergeant as a special.

Simon is a member of the National Association of Stolen Vehicle Examiners (www.nasve.org), where he is recognised as a Qualified Stolen Vehicle Examiner (QSVE). He holds a Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering Design, Manufacture, and Management and is a past President of the IAATI UK Branch.

Phil Pentelow

Phil is a vital component of the Essex Police Stolen Vehicle Intelligence Unit (SVIU), where he leverages his lifelong passion for cars to combat vehicle-related crimes effectively. Starting his journey with Essex Police as a cadet immediately after leaving school, he became an officer at the tender age of 18. His career path in the force has been diverse, beginning with frontline response duties before moving into more specialized roles in public order and armed policing.

It was in these high-stakes environments that Phil began working closely with QSVE Paul Gerrish, focusing on developing intelligence and recovering stolen vehicles in the intervals between firearms operations.
Together, they have achieved significant success, in 2023, their team successfully recovered 737 vehicles valued at £27 million. They continue continue to build on their accomplishments within the SVIU.

Phil doesn't boast an extensive personal collection of cars, he subscribes to the philosophy that quality trumps quantity when it comes to automobiles. His keen eye for detail and deep understanding of vehicle dynamics make him an indispensable member of the team.

Mark Rose

Mark has been working in connected vehicle intelligence for over a decade, most recently at Tracker Network (UK) Ltd, the UK’s leading stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) specialist and provider of insurance and fleet telematics.

In addition to ensuring Tracker retains its exclusive 30-year strong partnership with all the UK’s police forces - a collaboration that underpins Tracker’s unique SVR offer - Mark has been instrumental in securing and building relationships with premium OEMs, top automotive retailers and leading UK insurers to protect people, assets and profitability.

Over the last twenty-five years, including his time at Vodafone and Cable & Wireless, Mark has played pivotal roles in acquiring and integrating businesses, leading sales through indirect partners globally and driving innovative initiatives across market expansion, data monetisation and channel development.

Ahron Tolley

Director /Intelligence Investigations W4G Group.

Ahron, with nearly two decades in vehicle crime investigations, started at West Yorkshire Police and later private sector roles, including Security Manager for Avis Budget UK, UK Trust and Safety Manager for Turo. He collaborates with Lawn and HM Government on vehicle crime and rental vehicle security.

Lee Newman West

Lee is Head of Operations for Opal and has been a detective across various roles within Thames Valley Police and the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).
He started his career in Oxfordshire and always had a strong interest in organised crime, investigation and proactive Policing. After a few years as a uniformed officer, he moved into various roles as a Detective Constable including burglary, car theft and vehicle crime, and the Criminal Investigation Department, before being promoted to Detective Sergeant, where he headed up teams including priority crime, vehicle crime, burglary teams and main office CID.
Lee then moved as a Detective Sergeant into the world of intelligence leading teams in Oxfordshire and then within the force intelligence bureau before moving to the regional county lines coordinator role, where he joined the National County Lines Coordination Centre (NCLCC) working on a regional and national basis.
Lee then joined the Thames Valley Police violence reduction unit as lead for county lines and exploitation, and worked with partners around reducing serious violence and drugs related harm.
His responsibilities within his role as Head of Operations include:
Leading joint operational activities in partnership.
Heading up the operational delivery functions within Opal.
Maximising data and intelligence opportunities across policing and partners.
Enhancing and developing innovative and collaborative ways of working to tackle SOAC and related threats.
Opal is the national intelligence unit focused on serious organised acquisitive crime (SOAC) where there is a series of offences impacting on two or more police force areas, including Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Opal team is the intelligence and coordination function responsible to the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) portfolio for Serious and Organised Acquisitive Crime, which sits under the wider Crime Operations Coordination Committee. The team drive identifying and developing intelligence involving SOAC across the UK and linked matters overseas.

Janine McKinney

Janine was admitted as a solicitor in 1989 following articles in Leicester. After a year in private practice, Janine joined Nottinghamshire CPS as a Crown Prosecutor in January 1991 and two years later became a Senior Crown Prosecutor. In 2003 she was promoted to District Crown Prosecutor with responsibility for one of the Magistrates’ Court teams and then, in 2009, took on responsibility for the whole of the Magistrates’ Court team. Janine moved to Derbyshire as Senior District Crown Prosecutor and became SDCP for the Magistrates’ Court in 2012. Appointed Deputy CCP in July 2013, she was then appointed CCP in October 2015 and is also the CCP lead for road traffic offences. Janine was Nottinghamshire Law Society President in 2022-2023.

Bryan Gast

Bryan Gast is currently the Vice President of Investigative Services Division at Équité Association. He brings 30 years of experience in law enforcement, including a posting as Detective Inspector in the Criminal Investigation Branch with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). He was the Unit Commander of the OPP Anti-Rackets Economic Crimes and Corruption Unit, and Unit Commander of the OPP Provincial Identity Crimes Unit. Bryan believes collaboration through public/private partnerships is essential to combat crime and he strives to build and maintain partnerships.

Sharon Naughton

Sharon is an ex Police inspector for West Midlands Police who after 30 years of service retired and became a professional Tutor at Coventry College before becoming the deputy head of the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service in July 2018.

In Jan 2024 she stepped up to become the Unit head.

NaVCIS is a national police unit that acts as a bridge between police and industry. Our unique role enables us to work across police and the private sector to tackle aspects of vehicle crime and staffed by a team of retired police officers who are subject- matter experts who pool all their experience into investigating vehicle finance fraud and theft and cargo crime. NaVCIS work with foreign law enforcement to identify stolen finance vehicles overseas and facilitate the seizure of cars depriving criminals of illicit assets. NaVCIS have officers working at ports to prevent and disrupt the export of stolen finance vehicles to destination markets abroad. The national police freight/cargo crime desk is hosted by NaVCIS who have the National Intelligence picture of the threat and risk surrounding the organised criminality behind this crime. NaVCIS are experts in this field and we advise police, industry and government departments. NaVCIS also collaborate with vehicle-tracking industry partners. As a police unit, NaVCIS has law enforcement capabilities that it exploits to focus on vehicle crime and offenders, including determined criminals and organised crime groups, working closely with police colleagues
